The poultry market in the Kurdistan Region

According to press reports, more than 2,000 poultry farms operate in the Kurdistan Region, and production exceeds local demand, so part of the output is shipped to central and southern Iraq.

Since 15 January 2026, Iraq has banned imports of frozen chicken; the decision does not apply to products from the Kurdistan Region.

What drives chicken prices?

Feed makes up about 70% of production costs, so changes in the dollar rate and transport costs feed directly into chicken prices.

Day-old chick prices, the season (summer heat and winter cold), Ramadan and the Eid holidays, and shipments to other Iraqi cities are the main reasons prices rise and fall.

How are these prices collected?

Farmers, traders and hatchery agents send the prices in their city every day. The published price is the median of all reports, and reports far from the rest are left out. When a price comes from a news source, the source is named under the price.

For farmers: before you sell

Compare several cities, look at the change over the last few days, and work out the feed and chick cost of your cycle. Average flock weight and mortality rate both have a direct effect on profit.
